About Mel

With 15 years of roller skating experience and over two decades of teaching, I’ve dedicated my life to helping others discover the joy and artistry of roller dance. My journey has taken me across the globe, teaching diverse groups of skaters and developing a unique methodology that bridges the gap between traditional dance fundamentals and roller skating mastery.

Drawing from my worldwide teaching experience, I’ve observed that many aspiring roller dancers face a common challenge: while they’re eager to groove on eight wheels, they often lack the foundational movement awareness that makes dance flow naturally. This insight has shaped my teaching approach, which focuses on building a strong movement vocabulary from the ground up.

My workshops are carefully structured to develop both your technical skills and body awareness through progressive drills. We begin by establishing fundamental movement patterns that translate beautifully to roller skating, helping you develop what I call your “movement language.” This approach has consistently helped my students progress faster and with greater confidence than traditional methods.

Throughout our sessions, I’ll share insights from roller dance culture and pay homage to the influential teachers who shaped my journey and continue to inspire the community. You’ll learn not just the moves, but the rich history and context behind them.

Whether you’re taking your first steps on wheels or perfecting complex combinations, my workshops are designed to meet you at your level. You’ll leave with practical drills and combinations that you can practice independently, ensuring your progress continues long after our session ends. I specialize in breaking down complex movements into manageable components, offering clear methodologies for mastering challenging techniques.

I welcome students to share specific movements they find challenging—this allows me to tailor exercises and breakdowns that address your individual goals and help you overcome any obstacles in your roller dance journey.

Join me to discover how to move with greater fluidity, confidence, and truly find your style on your roller skates, all while becoming part of the vibrant roller dance community.

What the workshop will cover:

If you are stable on your roller skates, can perform lemons forwards and step side to side, you’ll be able to join in. If you can do more, include skating backwards and turn around, you’ll gain more, but everyone will leave with some suggestions to improve their skating.

We will learn a series of drills, designed to teach and improve balance and co-ordination. We will then take a selection of these moves to create a rhythmic combination to gain control and flow over the movements as well as consider other musical aspects including tempo, accent and intention.
