INFORMATION

ABOUT US

The Deaf Institute is an independent fun loving bar & venue, spread across 3 floors, with 3 bars, a kitchen & a roof terrace.

Housed in a historic Manchester building originally built in 1878 as The Deaf Institute, the building was derelict when we first got our hands on it over a decade ago, and we have refurbished it back to something we hope approaches its original glory. Located just off the bustling Oxford Road, we are based in the heart of the Manchester Metropolitan University Campus.

In the main bar we have big sharing tables & leather booths, expect fresh & tasty scran with a focus on vegan food, local ales & craft beer, party tunes & good times.
The music hall on the first floor hosts live gigs, comedy & club nights in a ballroom under a massive mirror ball, with velvet curtains, a domed ceiling, tiered seating and parrots on the wall. We have been lucky enough to see a solid procession of world class talent on our humble little stage over the years, with some of todays biggest names in music gracing our stage in the early stages of their career.
The basement bar is a dandyish den perfect for parties, schmoozing or down & dirty club nights.

Everything you could need for a big night out!

COVID MEASURES

Keeping our venues a Covid free environment is a collaborative effort from us all. Help us keep live music and clubbing alive and safe. If you have symptoms please don’t turn up to the venues.

Please be aware some specific shows require proof of double Covid vaccination, proof of negative lateral low test or proof natural immunity. We will inform customers individually via email of any upgraded covid entry requirements, so please check your email before travelling to the venue.

NHS Track and Trace – It’s still possible to check into our venues using the NHS Track and Trace app.

Masks – As we are now operating at full capacity and in a small enclosed space we recommend all customers to wear a mask on entry and when moving around in the venue.

Sanitising Stations – We will have hand sanitisation stations at regular intervals through the venues so you can always top up throughout the show or club night.

Lateral Flow Tests – Please don’t come to the venues if you know you are infectious. We would advise to take a lateral flow test 48 hours before attending a show.

Get Vaccinated – We all want that full live gigging and clubbing experience back and the quickest way to get there is to  go and get vaccinated and the very first opportunity.

Cleaning – High impact areas will be sanitised on a regular basis and the venues deep cleaned after every event.

ACCESSIBILITY

The music hall where live events take place is situated on the top floor of our beautiful listed building. If customers require assistance traveling up and down the stairs or if reserved seating would assist those who would find standing difficult, we will be happy to arrange this for you. Please contact us in advance at bookings@thedeafinstitute.co.uk.  If you have other needs we may be able to assist with or have any questions or just want a chat please do not hesitate to get in touch.

CARER TICKET SCHEME

In our commitment to making the venue accessible to everyone, we will provide those ticket holders with a disability that require full time assistance with a complimentary ticket for their personal carer/assistant. To take advantage of this scheme please contact us with your ticket reference number. You will also be asked to please provide via email copies of recent (2010) DLA letters that show what your current level of care or mobility allowance is. We appreciate that some people may require assistance but not receive DLA, please contact us to discuss your access requirements. Each request will be looked at individually. The scheme is run on a first come first served basis up to the capacity of the venue and/or designated area.
We don’t send out the carer tickets in advance: the tickets will be issued at the event.
